Having outed yourself as a fledgling writer, you will find that you are not alone. A recent YouGov poll voted 'Writer' as the top job Joe Public most wants to do. With that sort of competition, you will need to be an outstanding purveyor of your craft with the dedication and ruthlessness to match or, failing that, just be incredibly lucky.

Still don't believe me? Perform your own survey when you inform your work colleagues about your plans. After congratulating you on escaping the rat race, they'll invariably follow up with, 'I've always wanted to write a book too.' Watch their eyes to go starry as they monologue about how they love inventing bedtime stories for their children, who really like daddy's silly characters and voices, and have pestered him for years to write them down. Be patient. Wait until they feed you the line, 'So where did you get your idea from to write a book?', then take them out of the running with your well timed response.

'Funny you should say that, but I've always loved inventing stories for my children...'
