Chapter 10 - Talk the Talk
Next

The coursework has ended, and the final exam re-sits are done, which means that you are now fully qualified in the theory and language of writing. It's time to walk the walk and talk the writing talk. As it's too early for you to have blagged your way onto the invite list for a new book launch, I suggest you try out your literary vocal skills at the next party you go to. Here's how to do it.

When you arrive, walk up to the first or third person you meet and introduce yourself as a creative writer. Intrigue them by narrating the plot of your latest short story. If that doesn't hook them, engage them in a dialogue about the setting around you, but don't be stereotypical by talking about the weather, unless the event begins on the outside. Be sympathetic to their point of view, and plot your next words carefully. If they accuse you of being unstructured and out of character, claim you're going down with a bad case of omniscience, retire to the bar and apply the stream of unconsciousness drinking technique.

Job done...just don't expect any more invites.
