Your first writing experience will be drafting your resignation letter. Keep it brief, something along the lines of, 'I quit' will do, but don't forget to sign it. Then hand it to your boss.
'You're doing WHAT? Run that past me again.'
'I'm handing in my resignation, Bob. I'm going off to write children's books.'
'Damn, I thought I'd misheard. So let me get this straight. You're giving up an excellent salary and a respected position in the bank to...to...write kiddies' books?'
'Early chapter books for boys aged 7 to 10 actually, but yes that's pretty much the gist of it.'
'I thought I could depend on you, Steve. I really did. Words fail me.'
'Why not try, "Good luck"?'
'Mmm...I suppose I'll just have to cope without you. However, I will need you to work out your three month notice period, and recruit and train your replacement (preferably somebody cheaper), as well as draft a five year strategy for your department with full plans and costings for the upcoming budget approval round.'
'I was hoping to finish earlier, but three months extra money would come in useful.'
'Good. That's settled. I'll notify HR. Oh, and one last thing.'
'What's that?'
'It wasn't anything to do with me was it?'
'Of course not, Bob. Working for you has been a real experience.'
